Bicycle and Rowing Boats
Bicycles can be rented from Balestrand Bike and Hike operating out of the Tourist Office. If you take the ticket for the Aquarium, you can also use their rowing boats or canoes for an hour.

You will meet the two artists Bjørg Bjøberg and Arthur Adamson.

Bjørg and Arthur are two of the many artists residing in Balestrand. Bjørg with her creative use of water colors, captures the spirit of the fjord, its’ scenery, architecture, flora and residents.
Arthur uses more complex techniques and color space and often takes a long time to complete his paintings.

You can meet them both at their gallery/gift shop located in the village center or visit their cafe in the same location, Kafe Me snakkes

Enamel Workshop

Rolf and Solveig Haukas invite you to their studio to learn about the production of their enamel jewelry and other enamel art work. Jewelry and art work are available for sale. The workshop is located 10 km from the center of town. Visits are free. In the off season it is adviseable to make an appointment.

Balestrand is an excellent spot for hikers. The surrounding mountains offer a variety of trekking trails for the leisurely walker to the very serious hiker.Treks range from an hour stroll along the well marked nature trail (with placards in English explaining the flora and fauna of the region) to a invigorating 12 hour hike over the mountain tops giving you breathtaking views of the fjord. Several of the summit hikes are family friendly and can be achieved by young children as was proven by our five year old daughter.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the village of Balestrand. Multi-lingual information is available with explanations of the various points of interest. Local guides are usually available upon request.

Sognefjord Aquarium

Learn about the flora and fauna of the Sognefjord. The aquarium has an excellent exhibit of the local sea life. There is a slide presentation that depicts life on the fjord, past and present. Check with tourist information or the reception for opening hours.

St. Olafs`s Church
St. Olafs Anglican Church, built in the pseudo-stave church style was completed in 1897 as a memorial to Margaret Green. Margaret, an English lady came to the fjords as a tourist to hike the mountains. She met, fell in love with and married Knut Kvikne who was an avid mountain man. Being a very pious woman, she wished for an Anglican church in Balestrand. She started the church with her husband, but died before its’ completion. Sunday services are held during the summe months, beiing conducted by rotating vicars from England.
